General use

A basic kit for non-specific photography should cover between 28-300mm.

Portraits

Portraits are best shot with focal lengths between 85 and 300mm depending on whether shooting mid-length or close-ups and the amount spacial compression wanted. Depth of field is the most important tool to manipulate and a fat lens will give more scope for creative treatment.

Court-based sports

Sports played on a court allow the photographer to get close to the action and a wide angle lens with a fast aperture is necessary to capture natural light in interiors.  Telephoto focal lengths up to 300mm are necessary for other shots. Ultrasonic motor is a must for fast action focusing. Stabilization helps achieve good motion blur effects when not tripod mounted.
