Roof prism designs have straight barrels with the front objective in-line with the eye piece. This design architecture makes it possible to produce more compact binoculars than porro or inverted porro designs. Optical consequences of the design are that roof prisms are more expensive to manufacture than porro binoculars of the same quality and require phase distortion coatings to eliminate the reduced contrast and sharpness caused by phase distortion – a roof prism phenomenon.  Roof prisms also produce a more photographically normal depth perception than porro prisms because the lens barrels are in line with the eyepieces.

Glass and Prism Quality

Bak-4 Prisms (barium crown glass) are the highest quality, producing no internal light loss.

ED Prime Extra-Low Dispersion fluorite glass delivers good colour resolution and contrast, and virtually eliminates chromatic aberration and colour-fringing to bring out more detail in low-light conditions. Unlike ordinary lens surfaces, ED Prime Extra-Low Dispersion flourite glass allows the visible colors of the spectrum to focus at virtually the same point. This helps provide improved color resolution and contrast, practically eliminating chromatic aberration and color-fringing, and bringing out detail even under low-light conditions.

Coating Rating

Coatings help improve light transmission, especially in roof prism designs. This binocular is rated as FULLY MULTI-COATED, meaning that all surfaces have more than one coating.

Special Coatings

This binocular uses an Ultra Wide Band coating process which is an anti-reflection coating process that is customized for every lens element in the optical path, in order to improve light transmission and brightness.

Rainguard HD is an improved formula anti-fog technology that breaks up moisture faster and more effectively than the original Rainguard coating introduced by Bushnell. It also creates a more slick surface to help clear the elements on the lens easier and faster. This hydrophobic coating acts on water drops from rain, snow, sleet and even your own breath, reducing them into much smaller droplets. These tiny drops scatter less light, ensuring a clearer, brighter view. Useful for viewing in inclement weather conditions.

Eye Relief

The 15.4mm eye relief on this binocular provides superb viewing comfort for both spectacle and non-spectacle wearers.

Exit Pupil

This binocular has an exit pupil of 3.6mm, for use in shaded or heavy overcast daylight.
