Design and Ergonomics

15g lighter than the 40D, the 50D has dimensions of 146 x 108 x 74 mm and a magnesium alloy body that is built to withstand mild rain and dusty conditions. Its physical appearance is practically identical to the 40D and its feel in the hand is the same – solid and reliable.

The button arrangement is fairly neat, with a mode dial next to the 3-inch LCD and four function keys jotted below the screen, which has a higher resolution of 920k dots, effectively a change from 320 x 240 RGB pixels to 640 x 480 RGB pixels. Its 0.95x magnification and 95% field coverage, viewfinder is designed to avoiding distortion or corner softness and features eyepiece rubber that is removable allowing for the eyepiece cover or different eyepieces / angled finders to be fitted.

Picture Quality

With 15.1 megapixels you can achieve 10x12 inch prints at full resolution with room for cropping, and enlargement to acheive high quality poster size prints, yet at a lower resolution.

The CMOS sensor is capable of recording up to 4752 x 3168 pixels with full 14-bit A/D conversion and works in conjunction with the DIGIC 4 image processor for extremely fine tonal gradation and colour reproduction.

Capable of recording at sensitivities previously too noisy for shooting in low light or subjects in motion, the Canon 50D has a maximum ISO rating of 12800.

Performance Features

The Canon 50D captures up to 6.3 frames per second in high-speed continuous shooting mode,  and features an impressive 9 autofocus points, with 3 settings: One-Shot AF, which focuses for a static point and then stops; AI Servo, which uses the focus points to continuously track the focus of fast moving subjects and takes into account shutter lag when adjusting final focus; and AI Focus, good for static or slow moving subjects, this setting automatically switches between AI Focus and One-Shot according to the movement of the subject.

Shutter speeds and Aperture are adjusted in 1/3 stops (from 30sec- 1/8000th sec) and three exposure methods are available: Evaluative metering uses 35 zone through the lens auto-exposure, Centre-weighted average metering gives more bias to the center of your picture, Partial metering at centre uses the centre 9% of your frame for exposure and spot metering uses approx. 3.8% of your frame.

ISO settings are available from 100-1600ISO automatically and can be manually boosted to 12800ISO, while White balance can be set automatically, through a setting or custom set. Flash synchronisation is 1/250 second.

Technology features

The 50D features New Face-detection live mode which simplifies portraits and group shots by automatically locating a face in a scene and rapidly focusing on it. Alternatively you can use the Multi-controller to select a different face amongst the crowd. The Quick and Live mode autofocus functions extend your creative control by prioritizing either shooting or viewing, respectively.

The Self Cleaning Sensor Unit activates as soon as you turn your camera on when you power on, automatically cleaning the low-pass filter where dust mainly accumulates.
You can also manually activate the cleaning process whenever you detect dust on images. The low-pass filter now includes a fluorite coating that makes it incredibly easy to eliminate stubborn particles with a blower brush.
