Design and ergonomics

With dimensions of 159.5 x 157 x 87.5 mm and weighing 1.2kg (body only), the Nikon D3s features a 920k dot 3-inch VGA LCD monitor with wide, 170-degree viewing angle and brightness adjustment. Its durable Magnesium alloy body is built to withstand the rigors of the harshest of environments and it features the same multi-selector that’s used on the D3 series with the addition of a dedicated Live View button and an Info button.  

Picture Quality

At 12.1 megapixels you can print 10x12 inch full resolution pictures with some room for cropping, with high quality enlargements up to poster size. The In-camera RAW processing saves time in post-production by enabling JPEG compression, Size, White Balance, Exposure Compensation, Picture Control, Noise Reduction, Colour. The D3s is powered by the EXPEED image processing engine with 14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit image processing for superb tonal gradation.

Performance features

The D3s shoots in burst mode at 9 frames per second, or 11fps in DX crop mode, or 48 RAW frames in one burst and has an ISO of 200 – 12800, extendable up to 102,400 and down to ISO 100 with the Lo-1 setting. D-Movie records high-definition (HD-ready) movie clips in stereo sound (Compatible stereo microphone required) and features edit, start/stop and Save selected frame functions, as well as AF support in Tripod mode. Technology features

The D3s also has a LiveView setting that displays what the lens sees in the large 3 inch LCD.  Nikon’s LiveView feature also has an improved (30% faster) contrast based autofocus system.

This camera is also equipped with HDMI output, so images can be displayed on HD displays directly from the camera

Active D Lighting analyses the scene much like Scene Recognition and then adjusts the exposure according to the shadow and highlighted areas. These adjustments help a high contrast scene to be captured in much the same way that your eyes view the image before capturing it. On the D3s it has an ‘Extra High’ setting, which adjusts metering as well as applies D-lighting curve.
