Design and ergonomics

With dimensions of 147 x 114 x 74 mm and weighing 840g (body only), the Nikon D300s features a 3 inch LCD and the same multi-selector that’s used on the D3 series and D700 which features a centre button to trigger movie start and stop. The D300S also features a Quiet release mode for discrete photography by allowing the user to manage the mirror return manually. The dedicated Info button simplifies displays and short cuts to commonly used settings, and the built-in pop-up flash diffuser covers 16mm wide-angle field of view.

Picture Quality

At 12.3 megapixels you can print 10x12 inch full resolution pictures with some room for cropping, with high quality enlargements up to poster size. The camera inherits the groundbreaking imaging technologies from the D300 such as Scene Recognition System with 1005 pixel RGB colour metering, and class-leading autofocus performance from the 51-Point Multi-CAM3500 autofocus system, which together deliver accurate autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance control. The EXPEED image processing system delivers Nikon’s acclaimed image quality criteria of rich accurate colours, smooth skin gradations, exceptional detail with the minimum of noise,  with all of the flexibility of Nikon’s exclusive Picture Control system to manage the ‘look and feel’ of your work.

Performance features

The D300s shoots in burst mode at 7 frames per second and has a usable ISO range from 200 to 3200, expandable down to 100 ISO and up to 6400 ISO. With this kind of light sensitivity at hand, shooting flashless in well lit indoor situations is an option. To aid in autofocus Nikon has introduced 2 AF point area settings: 11 or 51. With single point AF selectable amongst 51 points the photographer has a high degree of control and the 51 points also improve autofocus tracking manifold above previous systems. Images are sampled at 14 bit, which records a substantially higher number of tones over the previous 12 bit standard for more accurate and smoother tones.

Technology features

The D300s also has a LiveView setting that displays what the lens sees in the large 3 inch LCD. Nikon’s LiveView feature also has a contrast based autofocus system. This camera is also equipped with HDMI output, so images can be displayed on HD displays directly from the camera

Active D Lighting analyses the scene much like Scene Recognition and then adjusts the exposure according to the shadow and highlighted areas. These adjustments help a high contrast scene to be captured in much the same way that your eyes view the image before capturing it.
