Design and ergonomics

The solid and sturdy magnesium alloy body of the D700 is sealed to dust and moisture and has a rugged construction for extra protection of its internal components.

The display includes onscreen hot keys, which allow quick access to commonly changed functions and features a multi-controller main dial on top.

The big, bright viewfinder has an internal shutter to block stray light, rounded AF points and displays 95% of the frame area. Its round design makes it easy to get your eye in close so you can see the entire frame.
Made from scratch resistant glass, the high-resolution LCD displays 920K pixels, offers sharp and detailed reviewing of captured images and features a 170 degree viewing angle, 100% view and Live View mode.

Picture Quality

With 12.2 megapixels you can get a 8x12 inch print with plenty of room for cropping at full resolution, with greater enlargement possible to achieve high quality poster size prints.

The Nikon Expeed processor gives the D700 greater speed, and automatically corrects chromatic aberration before saving the JPEG file and incorporates Picture Control technology so that camera settings for tone, saturation, brightness, and sharpening can be set.

Active D-Lighting processes shadows and darker areas to show better detail at the captured exposure, improving overral tonal quality.
The image control allows users to adjust and fine-tune sharpening, contrast, brightness, filter effects and toning, and the built-in flash has 24mm lens coverage.

Performance Features

The strategically positioned 51 AF points of the D700's Multi- CAM 3500FX AF sensor module keeps your subject in focus, even with quick and erratic subject movement, across a wide extent of the frame.
The highly responsive AF sensor detects your subject in EV as low as -1. The 15 points of the three center rows employ cross-type sensors for extra powerful detection with any NIKKOR lens of f/5.6 or faster.

The D700’s three AF area modes — Single-point AF, Dynamic-area
AF, and Auto-area AF —accommodates shooting in most situations.
Single-point AF ensures that the most important element in your composition will be sharply focused, Dynamic-area AF allows users to select from several focusing
options, utilizing 9, 21 or all 51 points.  Auto-area AF uses colour information and special face recognition algorithms to automatically focus on an individual’s face, extremely helpful for situations when there’s simply no time to select a focus point or
when using Live View in Hand-held mode at high or low angles.

With a startup time of 0.12 seconds and shutter release time lag as short as 40 milliseconds, the D700 combines shoots at speeds of 5 frames per second, which can be increased to 8 fps with the optional multi-power batter pac MB-D10 — ideal for sports or other action photography.

Technology Features

D700 incorporates Nikon’s exclusive lateral chromatic aberration reduction function, compensates for the differences in colour by resolving index for each color, making it particularly effective for reducing the image distortion at the edges of a frame in addition to improving image quality throughout the entire frame.

The dust removal system employs piezoelectric elements which generate vibrations at four specific frequencies to optimize dust removal.

Several custom functions are available to optimise the quality of photos captured in a range of situations. Highlight Tone Priority boosts the dynamic range at the highlight end, providing better tonal detail from wedding dresses, cloudy skies and other bright objects.

Nikon’s Scene Recognition System enables more precise colour information readouts for higher level of detailed scene information and analysis. Each scene is analyzed milliseconds prior to shutter release, further optimizing autofocus, auto exposure, i-TTL control and white
balance — before the image is captured.

the AF system automatically tracks your subject and automatically recognizes people and skin tones.
