Design and ergonomics

This ultra compact camera is only 96.5 x 57.5 x 25.5 mm, and with a weight of merely 140g is more than suitable for keeping in even a tight pocket, ready for quick quality snapshots. The 2.7 inch wide-viewing angle TFT LCD screen has an anti-reflection coating, with antifouling and water repellent layer, and screen brightness boost function. The S630’s metal body is constructed with an extra ergonomic bulge for good grip, soft lines for minimal snagging, and the function buttons have rounded edges. Overall, the camera is built for maximum flatness, and as such will fit comfortably in a pocket. A hard loop is built into the body for a safety lanyard to be attached.

Picture quality and lens

The powerful 7.0x optical zoom Nikkor glass lens, with an additional 4.0x digital zoom to bring the subject closer, and a 35mm focal length equivalence of 35-105mm along with 12.0 megapixel resolution allows the user to enlarge pictures substantially should they choose to. An impressive ISO sensitivity of up to 6400 means competent pictures in the shoddiest lighting conditions.

Key features

Nikon’s Smart Portrait System combines four different technologies that will fix red-eye, detect faces, fire the shutter when the subject smiles and warn the user if they blink, for superb portrait shots. Motion Detection automatically detects movement in the subject, adjusting the shutter speed and ISO accordingly with further picture stability provided by the Electronic VR image stabilisation. The camera’s Easy Auto Mode with Scene Auto Selector makes snapshots a breeze by letting the camera automatically select the best setting for quality pictures. Sport Continuous Mode for high-speed capture settings allows the user to capture subjects on the move with ease. The D-Lighting feature adds detail and optimises exposure in order to fix underexposed images, and Food Mode enables white balance adjustment on the LCD screen for desired colour tones. After shooting, selected pictures can easily be played back with Favourite Pictures in ‘Favourite’ folders as a show, or sorted using the Auto Sort feature which automatically categorises images into folders for easy access.
