Porro prism designs have the lens barrels set further apart than the eyepieces making them larger in size and bulkier than their equivalent roof prism models. The simpler optical manufacturing process makes it less expensive to produce equivalent porro prisms over roof prisms. They also do not suffer from phase distortion – which affects contrast and sharpness on roof models (which needs phase coatings to solve) and they produce slightly better depth perception because the lens barrels are set slightly further apart than the eyepieces.

Glass and Prism Quality

Bak-7 Prisms (borosilcate crown glass) are lower in quality than Bak-4 and as an isolated factor light transmission is reduced by 10-15%, resulting in a lower brightness image than that produced by Bak-4 prisms.

Coating Rating

Coatings help improve light transmission, especially in roof prism designs. This binocular is rated as FULLY COATED, meaning that all surfaces have at least one coating.
