Picture this: you are standing on a beach with you camera slung around your neck and a golden-red sunset is playing out before your eyes. You want to make sure that you are capturing the moment in absolute perfection so you are playing with the aperture and shutter speed settings to try and ensure the best exposure…but when you go to your preview screen to check how your pictures are coming out, despite the anti glare glaze that your camera has over the LCD, you just can’t be one hundred percent sure that your picture isn’t under or over exposed…

Here’s the trick.

Go to your cameras preview mode.
Press the ‘display’ button that allows you to switch between viewing your image full screen, viewing with minimal details or finally with full details.
With your image displayed in full detailed preview you will be able to see all the information about that image: size, ISO, aperture etc.

I want to draw your attention to the graph on display. This graph is your key to knowing if your photograph is under exposed, over exposed or perfectly how it should be.

If the graph seems to fall heavily on the left hand side, your image is under exposed, if you graph falls mostly on the right side, your image is over exposed. With the graph in the middle, your image will be in excellent exposure.

This will help you to know which settings work best for the scene that you are capturing, even when you can’t see the image on the display too clearly.

Here is an example of the graph.
